When the Cows Come Home follows five Bavarian families over the course of the twentieth century, centered around Herman and Merla Finkelstein, a Jewish couple whose tragic fate during the Holocaust shapes their descendants’ lives. After fleeing to Switzerland in 1943, their children are raised by Lutheran families, unaware of their Jewish roots. Through the purchase of a Hinterwalder bull, the families reconnect and rediscover their heritage. Spanning generations and countries, this novel explores the impact of the Holocaust, family bonds, and the shifting political landscape of Europe.
