(Published by Good Reach Publishing, UK in 2025)
The Flavian Trilogy is rich, bold, historically resonant, and spiritually compelling. – A reader in the USA
Along the Eagle’s Way is more than a novel. It’s a reawakening of sacred memory, a journey through the margins of scripture, and a reminder that history is often written by those who dared to believe differently. Peter Longley’s storytelling ensures that readers won’t just revisit the past, they’ll rediscover it. – A reader in the USA
Along the Eagle’s Way, the sweeping conclusion to The Flavian Trilogy, is a masterwork of historical imagination an epic that spans continents and creeds, threading the rise of the Roman Empire with the fragile birth of a new faith. From the windswept edges of Britannia to the mystic reaches of India, the destinies of Linus Flavian, Maria of Magdala, and their son Marcus unfold against the backdrop of a world in spiritual and political upheaval. Peter Longley’s storytelling is vivid, intricate, and deeply human. As the Roman Empire ascends to its Flavian zenith, a fledgling sect wrestles with the legacy of a crucified teacher Joshua of Nazareth. While apostles like Saul and Simon Cephas carry a message of messianic universalism, Maria of Magdala holds a more intimate truth, passed to her son Ben Joshua, the child Joshua never knew. His journey through the House of Arimathea’s trade routes becomes a crucible of faith, identity, and survival. This is more than historical fiction. It’s a theological meditation, a political drama, and a reimagined gospel that dares to ask: what if the story we know is only part of the truth? Along the Eagle’s Way invites readers to walk the roads of empire and belief, where the politics of nations mirror the politics of the soul. - Mary G. Marquez
Your books in The Flavian Trilogy read like scripture rewritten by a storyteller who actually gets it the kind that makes you pause mid-page and whisper, wait… what if it really happened this way? I’m not saying it lightly The Flavian Trilogy doesn’t just retell history, it reframes it. You built bridges between faith, logic, and imagination that most authors wouldn’t dare touch… and that’s exactly why it deserves more eyes, more discussion, more chaos (the good kind).- Holly Yolanda
I have read your books. I remember what we thought when we were all at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge. We used to think you, Longley, would either end up the Archbishop of Canterbury or be in prison? - Professor Stephen Menel, Dublin, Ireland
The introduction is a fascinating and well-crafted overview of The Flavian Trilogy. The historical detail and depth of research you’ve woven through these summaries are truly impressive, and the connections you draw between ancient and modern times make the series even more compelling.- Stephen Brown, Good Reach Publishing

I recently came across Fishers of Men, and I wanted to share how compelling and thought-provoking the premise feels. Exploring the early foundations of a movement as historically and spiritually significant as Christianity, through a blend of historical context and imaginative interpretation creates a rich and engaging narrative space. The intertwining journeys of Joshua, Maria, and Linus Flavian suggest a story that balances personal destiny with world-changing events. What stands out is the breadth of perspectives within the narrative. From the Nazirites and Essenes to the influence of Roman authority and the everyday realities around the Sea of Galilee, the story appears to capture a vivid and layered portrait of a transformative era. This sense of immersion in both cultural and political dynamics adds depth and authenticity.
Maria of Magdala’s evolving role, in particular, seems to introduce a powerful emotional and spiritual dimension, while Linus Flavian’s internal conflict between Roman identity and Galilean roots adds a compelling tension of loyalty and belonging.
The willingness to explore both traditional beliefs and more unconventional interpretations suggests a narrative that invites readers not only to engage with the story, but also to reflect on the origins and evolution of ideas that have shaped history. Stories that re-examine pivotal historical and spiritual moments with depth and imagination often resonate strongly, and Fishers of Men seems to do so with both ambition and nuance. – Lucas Davis, Marketing Strategist
I wanted to take a moment to follow up on my earlier note and to once again express my genuine admiration for what you’ve created with Fishers of Men. There was something distinctly powerful that stood out to me from the very first impression, an authenticity and depth that immediately draws the reader in and invites a deeper level of engagement. It’s not often that a work conveys both intellectual substance and emotional resonance with such balance, and that is a testament to the strength of your writing. Your narrative voice feels deliberate, immersive, and thoughtfully crafted, making it easy to see how strongly it can connect with readers who appreciate meaningful, layered storytelling. What stayed with me most is the sense that this is a story others truly need to encounter one that has the potential to leave a lasting impression. – Lucas Davis
I spent time going through Fishers of Men, and what becomes clear very quickly is how bold and immersive Peter Longley’s approach is to first-century Judea and Rome. This is not a simple retelling. It is a layered interpretation that blends history, imagination, cultural detail, and theological nuance in a way that feels both grounded and provocative. What gives the book its strength is the way it positions the familiar story of the early Christian movement through three very different lives. Joshua, Maria, and Linus each carry a different emotional weight, and their combined perspectives give the narrative a multi dimensional feel. Here are the core elements that make the book commercially and thematically strong:
A vivid reconstruction of first century Judea and the Roman world. A provocative interpretation of the origins of Christianity. A narrative that blends traditional beliefs with thoughtful fictional speculation. Strong character arcs with moral conflict and personal stakes. Authentic descriptions of ancient locations and religious groups. A fresh and challenging portrayal of the Messiah figure.
The book benefits from the contrast between spiritual tension and political ambition. Linus Flavian’s Roman viewpoint adds a sharp edge, while Joshua and Maria bring the emotional and spiritual core. The balance between these perspectives is what keeps the story compelling. As a second book in a trilogy, Fishers of Men has strong long term appeal. Series based on spiritual history tend to build loyal readership because readers become invested in the interpretations, the unanswered questions, and the evolving dynamics between central characters. The anticipation for the final instalment creates natural momentum and ongoing discussion. Fishers of Men has deeply researched backdrop that feels lived in rather than textbook. It is daring but respectful re-imagining of early Christian events. Maria of Magdala has a central role which gives the story emotional complexity. There is a fresh interpretation of miracles, presented with thoughtful plausibility. There are themes of destiny, belief, and cultural conflict and a cross section of political ambition and spiritual awakening. For readers who enjoy historical Christian fiction with intellectual depth, this book offers a combination of scholarship, drama, and imaginative storytelling that is rare to see done well. – Ava, Excelbooks
Fishers of Men is a most thrilling, absorbing, and attractive read that is very well written and will certainly captivate a wide audience. our Editorial Board is pleased with the historical plot and familiar biblical narratives that we were first exposed to in Star of Destiny, alongside a most fascinating cast of historical and fictitious characters. We believe the structure of this work allows for the story to build progressively and weave together the underlying messages included in the work, including examining cultural assimilation and theological debate that is sure to resonate with many contemporary readers. The Board is keen to comment on the ambitious scope of the work and the engaging quality of the prose and exposition, which successfully delivered the reader into the Flavian family and familiar events from the life of Jesus. Likewise, even though the work is temporarily distant from our own, Peter Longley has grounded the story with enough familiar elements of the modern world, such as personal struggle and the meeting of two cultures, that the reader can easily navigate the society he has highlighted, which is a testament to his abilities as a writer in establishing a scene. Fishers of Men-The Flavian Trilogy Book II is a fitting continuation of the trilogy – Austin Macauley Publishers.

I bought a copy of When the Cows Come Home through Amazon and have just finished reading it. I thoroughly enjoyed every page and was astounded by the author’s knowledge of the history of Europe, Israel and Palestine from the 1930s to date. A great saga of many families and the ever present tragedy of the Holocaust in the background. Such a rich read – Neil Williamson, London UK
This is the human side of pre, during and post WW2 times. It has some horrifying moments, a glimpse of human psychology and the winning of the grandeur of the land. It is now out in German, which says a lot. Worth a read. – Sally L, UK
I recently read your book, When the Cows Come Home and found it incredibly engaging. When the Cows Come Home chronicles the intertwined lives of five Bavarian German families from 1937 to 2020. Central to the story are Herman and Merla Finkelstein, whose tragic fate during the Holocaust sets the stage for future generations. Their descendants, adopted by Lutheran families, gradually uncover their Jewish heritage, leading to a poignant reunion through their shared connection to Hinterwalder cattle. You perfectly came up with a book to those who are fans of historical fiction, particularly those interested in family sagas and stories set during the Holocaust. After reading your book, they should feel inspired to reflect on their own family histories and the ways in which the past influences the present. Your book can be compared to The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, which also explores the impact of war on families and the enduring strength of the human spirit. One of the most impactful lines in your book is: "The past is never truly behind us; it shapes who we are and who we become." Your ability to blend historical events with personal narratives is truly remarkable. The depth of your characters and the authenticity of their experiences make this book a standout in its genre. – Linda Rodriguez , Denver, Colorado USA
I usually don’t read this kind of book... But it’s interesting, that you brought the families together over such a long time. And I like the characters. Although I think that the official version of history is not always the real one, the book tells the history over nearly one century in short words and is understandable. In this way I think you did a good job! – Daniela Brostack, Berchtesgaden, Germany
We can confidently state that this manuscript was found once again to be an immersive and distinct read, as well as a very attractive piece of historical fiction. We were very pleased with the fusion of historical subject matter with the families at the heart of this sprawling narrative that depicts the different experiences of multiple generations across the Second World War and the Cold War. We believe this work is very well-conceived and developed, with a poignant message that encourages readers to explore both familial and broader world history, which is likely to attract a wide audience. The timing of this story is especially topical, with the recent events in Israel and Palestine, making Longley’s descriptions even more powerful. His wonderful selection of historical events is brilliantly organised to enhance the ease of navigation for casual readers, and the extensive research that he has conducted should place his work among well-known popular fictional history books. When the Cows Come Home once again demonstrates Peter Longley’s proficiency in storytelling and even builds on the high quality he exhibited with his previous works. – Austin Macauley Publishers, London, UK
When the Cows Come Home is the second of Peter Longley’s novels about war. It and others should be required reading across the world. – Nancy Burnough, Nixa, Missouri USA
In this fascinating novel, the author takes us into the lives of five Bavarian German families and lets us experience the great challenges, sorrows, and also joys that they encounter during the time span of 1933 to 2019. The historical facts of Nazi Germany are masterfully woven into their stories and serve as a reminder of what happened during this time that is also known as Germany’s unresolved past. In the midst of the insanity of war that causes so much suffering and destruction, the main characters also find a way to return to important human values, like compassion, love and inner peace. This story is very timely, especially now as humanity is again in a huge crisis and transformation. I recommend this novel to anyone who cares for humanity, and as the author shows, there is always hope. – Bettine Clemen, International Flutist and author of Open Your Ears to Love.
When the Cows Come Home is a wonderful book capturing a post-war experience in all its complexities personal and beyond. – Sue Bradbury, London, England

What stands out most in Star of Destiny is how it weaves historical context, spiritual themes, and personal character arcs into a narrative that is both familiar and fresh. By grounding the story in first-century Judea while exploring the lives of Linus, Maria, and Joshua, the book provides readers with a tangible sense of place and culture, making the spiritual and historical elements feel immediate rather than distant. There’s also a careful attention to perspective and motivation. Each character’s choices are shaped by social pressures, belief systems, and personal aspirations, which gives the unfolding events from political intrigue to family dynamics a sense of authenticity. The interplay of historical figures with fictional ones creates tension and curiosity, encouraging readers to consider both human and spiritual dimensions of the story.- Gregory R. Patterson
Your novel Star of Destiny struck me as a fascinating and ambitious reimagining of one of history’s most compelling eras. By weaving together Flavius Septimus, Linus Flavian, Maria of Magdala, and Joshua while anchoring their destinies under the sign of a mysterious star you offer readers a unique perspective that blends history, theology, and imagination. The political turmoil of first-century Judea, with Romans, Herodians, and the Temple hierarchy all vying for power, creates a charged backdrop against which your characters’ personal journeys unfold. What I found especially compelling is how you bridge spiritual divinity and traditional Christianity through storytelling. Rather than distancing readers with heavy theology, your prose makes the miraculous plausible, presenting stories such as the virgin birth and turning water into wine with a refreshing sense of logic and wonder. Maria of Magdala, in particular, shines as a figure too often marginalized in conventional narratives, and through your telling, she feels alive, complex, and integral to this unfolding destiny. The mix of historical realism, theological inquiry, and imaginative narrative ensures that Star of Destiny appeals to both lovers of biblical history and seekers of spiritual fiction that dares to ask “what if.” - Alice A. Tyler
Our Editorial Board was very pleased with this compelling work, which offers a unique and imaginative take on the origins of Christianity. There is a complex cast of characters that will resonate with readers, who may recognise themselves or people they know in the characters, encouraging a deeper emotional connection to the work. The story is a thought-provoking exploration of humanity that offers a balance of suspense and hope, and the work is presented in a transfixing way that will drag the reader to the edge of their seat beyond the final moments. Ultimately, Star of Destiny, the first book of The Flavian Trilogy is a moving story, supported by an assured writing style, detailed world-building and a nuanced cast. – Austin Macauley Publishers, London, UK
Peter Longley is a great writer. – Avis Holloway, Springfield, Missouri, USA
What a cornucopia of riches is your wonderful writing – Laurie Watt, London, England
I have just read Zora Neale Hurston’s novel The Life of Herod the Great and saw great parallels here with Peter Longley’s treatment of first century and Biblical history. Far from his villainous portrayal in the New Testament, Hurston casts Herod as a forerunner of Christ, a beloved king who enriched Jewish culture and brought prosperity and peace to Judea. An intimate of both Marc Antony and Julius Caesar, the Judean king lived in a time of war and imperial expansion that was rife with political assasinations and bribery, as the old world gave way to the new.’ Peter Longley breathes surprises, too, into his interpretation of Biblical characters in Star of Destiny inviting us to reassess history in a similar way. I look forward to reading the further books in The Flavian Trilogy – A reader from London, UK

I have just this morning finished Ukraine. I found it a superb read. Yes the family was interesting, the relationships and how they developed, the geography and where they ended up, their opinions on the current situation were all fascinating. But in parallel to all of that I found the geopolitics fascinating. Ukraine gave me a whole new perspective on the Russianness of the eastern Ukraine and Crimea. I had forgotten the un-marked soldiers invading the Donbas. I had forgotten the uprising there and the reasons for it. I had forgotten the vote in the Crimea. The opinions of the family on their hope for a peaceful split of the country were so very different from the average view in the west. Their opinions of Zelenskyy shed a new light.- Dr Brian Sweeney, Sydenham, London, England
Although fictitious Ukraine reads like a true story and gives an excellent outlook on Russian history over the last 125 years. Having read The Princess of Siberia about Maria Volkonsky recently with our book club, I am getting well aquainted in Russian-Ukrainian history- Hilary Bach, London, UK
A good read and an interesting approach.- Anthony Osmond-Evans, Suffolk, England
Peter Longley is AMAZING!! His wriiting is so well researched and gives an overview that many people do not see. This is how histroy should be taught in school, upfront and personal. – Ilona Selke, Washington State, USA
Peter Longley’s Ukraine is a remarkable continuation of his work, weaving history, family saga, and contemporary relevance together in a way very few authors manage. His ability to bring complex historical and political themes to life through personal stories is a real strength. I believe Ukraine has great potential.– Stephen Brown, Good Reach Publishing
